                                                    DIGITAL PIRACY

Software piracy continues to be a rampant pandemic impacting industries, corpo-
rations and individuals all across the globe.

What’s more, one of the worlds most used computer operating system namely
Microsoft also wasn’t spared and has been actively involved in agressively combat-
                                                    ing piracy.

Over the years we have witnessed a massive crackdown on piracy be it music or
pirated digital software across most industries. But despite the stringent laws in
India, the healthcare industry continues to be a victim of software piracy. These
softwares are created and licensed under global regulations specifically for the
healthcare industry. They are the brainchild and efforts of various creative minds
together and such intellectual property needs to be protected at all costs.

Dental softwares need constant improvements, bug fixes and updates which are an
integral part of their evolution. But the pirated dongles which are available at a
fraction of the cost can be hazardous as they are infested with bugs and malware,
cannot be updated and are unregulated. These illegal softwares are a huge securi-
ty threat and can end up costing the user a lot more than they save while purchas-
                                                    ing them.
In our lab, many a times we have come across cases which have come to us for
rectification where the details has gone haywire due to faulty libraries being used.
In these cases, to undo and redo it right is the only solution leading to a loss of
the two most important resources – time and money.
To sum up, the threat of software piracy is one that neither governments nor the
innovators can tackle alone. We as end consumers have to ensure that we do not
encourage this illegal practice and on our part invest only in genuine software.
