                                                    NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

                                                    RAHUL KAKODKAR

                                                    A.I. AND METAVERSE – A DENTAL PERSPECTIVE

Coding – Algorithms - Machine Learning - Neural Networks – Artificial Intelligence today
are just not mere bots. They are full-fledged resources waiting to be unleashed in dental
practice, digital designing softwares, aligner simulations and other dental and medical
                                                    applications.

With all the recent buzz and hoopla around ChatGPT, Artificial Intelligence is taking shape
similar to what we used to witness in Sci-fi movies of the past. Early assessment, crucial
filtrations, corrective measures and effective outcomes can be enabled in Restorations and
                                                    Prosthesis.
If applied the right way, it shall enable the clinician and the lab to not miss out anything
and will aid in diagnostics, modifications to be done in the preparation design, selection
of appropriate restorative materials specific to the case and occlusion thus automation at
                                                    its peak.

What we have seen in recent times is robotic placements of implant prosthesis but what
we have yet to witness is an AI driven prosthetic planning. In recent times, the guided
surgeries have been AI based in terms of case planning but what if we could incorporate
bone density data further from the CBCT into the software - the outcome would be
                                                    exceptional.

Augmented and Virtual Reality in the Metaverse can be implemented in a way where the
dedicated AI can recommend the shape of a laminate to a patient depending on shape of
the face, age and gender. The patient can carry out digital trials remotely and choose to
try out other options based on AI suggestions. Similarly, we can have digital simulations
of full mouth cases – wherein, the algorithm enables the dentist and the lab to choose
                                                    from options available.

This will be the next leap and unfolds a new chapter in suggestive dentistry. While other
areas of healthcare had a head start towards a digital future first, but now it seems that
dentistry might be leading the way.
